Long Term and Short Term Cookies

Aside from using SingPass, cookie technology can also be used to facilitate user authentication.  This is to reduce the number of SingPass logins.

Two types of cookies will be created and used:  Long Term and Short Term Cookies.  Both cookies will be created upon the User's first login to the eLitigation Front End portal using his/her SingPass.  For subsequent logins, the user may not be prompted anymore with the SingPass login as long as the Long Term Cookie has not expired.

Long Term Cookies

Long Term Cookies are employed to allow the user to access non-chargeable or read-only transactions, such as:

The validity period of Long Term Cookies can be configured.  The default period is one day.

Once the validity period has expired, the User must re-login using his/her SingPass.  This will extend the validity of the Long Term Cookie for another day.  On the contrary, the validity of the cookie can expire at an earlier time when the User chooses to explicitly log out from the system.  This is to cater to situations wherein the User accesses the system in a public domain computer.

Long Term Cookies are extended when the User is logged in through valid SingPass authentication and he/she is actively using the system, or when the User is logged in through Long Term Cookie authentication.

When the User is logged in through SingPass and is actively using the system, Short Term Cookies are also extended.

Long Term Cookies will expire when the User has been inactive for more then the Long Term Cookie's persistence value.  The validity can also expire at an earlier time when the User chooses to explicitly log out from the system.

Short Term Cookies

Short Term Cookies are employed when the User performs transactions that incur fees, such as:

After the User has clicked the Submit button on the Step 4: Submission Page, the system will prompt the following message: "Your session has expired.  You need to log in again to proceed with the requested operation."

Upon clicking OK, the system will re-direct the user to the SingPass Login Page to validate the logged-in user's identity.  If the login credentials are correct, the system will direct the user back to the Step 4: Submission Page.  The User can then continue with his/her submission.

The validity period of Short Term Cookies can also be configured.  The default period is 60 minutes.

Once the user has been inactive for more than the pre-defined validity period, the User must re-login using his/her SingPass.  This will extend the validity of Short Term Cookies for another 60 minuted.  A validation will occur for the functions listed above.

Short Term Cookies are extended when the User is logged in through valid SingPass authentication and he/she is actively using the system.  In this case, Long Term Cookies are also extended.  Meanwhile, Short Term Cookies will NOT be extended when the User has been inactive for more then the Long Term Cookie's persistence value.  The validity can also expire at an earlier time when the User chooses to explicitly log out from the system.

Short Term Cookies will expire when the User has been inactive for more than the Short Term Cookie's persistence value.
